FireWorks is a vector and bitmap editor, while PhotoShop is only a bitmap editor!

Vectors are mathematical, geometrical shapes that can be scaled to whatever size without losing quality.

Photoshop is a raster program meaning pixels/bitmap.
Illustrator is a vector program, made more for print.

TIP: If you are every going to design for print you can use photoshop for designing but DON'T use the text in photoshop. Use indesign for type.

I personally think fireowkrs is easier to work than photoshop because it has all the effects there. Just press a button and you got a good quality text!

These two programs are very good for graphics. Photoshop however is more complex, and is used for the more advanced "Graphic Designers".

Fireworks, is far more easy to use, and takes less time learning. With that said, Fireworks still can produce amazing Graphics. My friend uses Fireworks, and he makes amazing Vector's, and graphics for magazines, and even runs his own business.

So, I honestly think it is what the user prefers.

I personally feel photoshop is far more better than fireworks and it is really helpful for designing purpose and there are some extension which do not work properly in Fireworks.

I think vector in the simplest of terms is the creation of a shape.

Fireworks is best for webdesign.......But photoshop is not bad it's also a good editing tool..

Photoshop:
The main purpose is edit and manipulate image and photos
Fireworks

Fireworks is a hybrid application, which means it can work with bitmap and vector graphics together. It can easily handle large files, even those larger than what can be stored in the memory
