In terms of powerful vocals and significance, Sam Cooke and Billie Holiday are my favorite.

Al Jolson, Bessie Smith, and Mahalia Jackson are close tiers for me.

-probably not the best example of her singing style.
She uses the most pronounced vibrato I've heard anywhere
(it's so cool.)but you don't really hear it in this song. You'd
need to get their first album, and hear "The Adultress" for that.

(This wouldn't be my first choice as an example of GFR's
music. But I took the question to be about singing,
and this song I assure you is hard to sing. You have to
open your mouth wide like for the dentist. You have to
learn control, to be able just to sing those "hoo-oops" at
the beginning right. (Singing isn't always about powering out
the notes, it can also be about controlling the quiet notes
too. Thats harder. Wink But,that's just me. I write music. I
know a little. This is Grand Funk Railroad...

One of my favorite singer has to be Eddie Vedder in Pearl Jam.
I really love the unplugged version of State Of Love And Trust.



Then I also like Jay Smith's (winner of Swedish Idol) voice especially in Madonnas Like a Prayer

Why not?
Look at the Eurovision Song Contest where most of the countries sing in English.. There are many Swedish and other none English speaking countries that has artist/groups that sing in English.
