Making a Signature Tutorial - Basics
by Dawn
First start with a background.
When I use to make maps for RPGs, they say the background is the backdrop - it's something that needs to look good before you continue first and foremost.
So use appropriate colors, and don't just stick with one. Personally I think gradients always look better.
The perfect background matches the image, so start by picking 2 colors from the render you will be using for the background. That way you always be sure to have a matching background.
Usually a background has more to it, like brushes, smudges, lighting effects but I won't go into detail with that. Really have fun with this part, the background is the part where I would say you have the most control in editing/manipulating.
Next is the
render or the image for your graphic.
I'm sure you are aware of using the
fuzzy select tool or
magic wand to cut out parts of an image to select what you want.
You can also go to planetrenders for a nice free selection of pre-cut renders.
With your render you can resize, add dimension, or even use it as a brush.
Your render is your most important part of your sig so really spend time manipulating it to perfection.
When all that is said and done, the final part is the text.
The text should be the last thing you worry about. I always believe your text should just be for your name. Certainly there are exceptions, but usually it shouldn't stand out or distract from the sig. If that means having small text, or some very opague text than I think it's worth it.
Avatars are a different story when you might want the text to be very noticeable.
Always remember to keep the original xcf or psd file and make several copies of your sig in the case you want to make changes!
Good luck
